The Fall to Make Heads Turn
Thanksgiving was a little different this year. Instead of having it with my dad's family we went to my mom's side. My two younger cousins were all worked up over creating a kickball game after stuffing our faces with Thanksgiving food. As a competitive person, I became really excited and really wanted to win. My team was called the Flying Squirrels and my offending team was called the Banana Slugs.
The opposing team was winning three to four with two outs in the last inning; it looked like we still had a chance to take the prize. My aunt's brother's girlfriend named Suzie was up. She was dressed up in a long dress and sweater, something that I could see my grandma wearing, not a thirty year old woman. Mounted on second and third base, my relatives looked as ready as if they were about to run a marathon. All that she had to do is kick the ball far enough to get the people on bases to home base and the Flying Squirrels would win the game. I could feel all of the anxiety building up in the players and in the crowd containing the two grandmas.
Suzie's face looked like nothing I had ever seen before. Her mouth was in a snarl exposing her crooked tooth with a little bit of bright pink lipstick that was also plastered on her wrinkly lips. She had her foot back ready to kick the ball long before the pitcher was ready to throw it. The pitcher finally rolled the awkwardly oval ball toward the home plate and Suzie took her best shot at the ball and it went straight to the second baseman. Fortunately, my younger cousin fumbled with the ball long enough so Suzy could get to first and the other two people on bases went all the way home. Suzie was not fulfilled with just going to first so she started running towards second. The ball was flying everywhere trying to find its way to Suzie. We all expected her to stop at second but she kept going. The crowd was going wild; cheering and laughing which made Suzie even more confident that she was going to bring us gold. As Suzie dodged a person with the ball she looked as confident as ever that she was going to make it all the way to home. Suddenly her floral print dress got caught in her shoe and she tripped. Suzie rolled a few feet before getting up and looking as embarrassed as ever. Her face was as red as the cranberry sauce that we had eaten less than a few hours ago. We all just looked at each other unsure on whether we were supposed to congratulate her on getting so far or to pity her for falling down. It was my favorite Thanksgiving moment by far.
